ENEMAS and FASTING

Many people are embarassed when it comes to the subject of enemas. It is an intimate topic that may be a little uncomfortable to discuss. However, enemas are one of the oldest and most essential natural remedies available to us. They are used in the treatment of illnesses and injuries, for cleansing purposes and to deliver nourishment.

There are two kinds of enemas:

1. The cleansing enema, which is retained for only a few moments and then released. It flushes out the colon. Cleansing enemas have been used to lower fevers, to treat constipation, acidosis, and many other digestive and intestinal ailments.

2. The retention enema, which is retained for a short while, approximately 15 minutes, and has a cleansing and nourishing effect on the internal organs, especially the liver.

Retention enemas are used, among other things, to relieve the headache associated with fasting (fasting causes the release of toxins which can result in a powerful headache).

Dr. James Balch explains the procedure for a coffee retention enema. The following is paraphrased from his book, Prescription For Nutritional Healing, Second Edition.

Coffee Retention Enema:

Place 2 quarts of steam-distilled water in a pan, add 6 heaping tablespoons of ground coffee.

Boil for 15 minutes, cool to a comfortable temperature and strain.

Use only 1 pint and store remainder in refrigerator in a closed jar for later use.

Place 1 pint of solution in enema bag.

Use Vitamin E or aloe vera to lubricate the enema tip.

The best position to receive the enema is the "head down, rear up" position. After the liquid has been inserted, roll onto your right side and hold the solution in your body for 15 minutes before allowing the fluid to be expelled. Do not roll side to side. Don't be concerned if the liquid is not expelled after 15 minutes. Once you stand up and move around, you will feel the urge to expel the liquid.

Dr. Balch further suggests that you use a cleansing enema first, before using the retention enema, so that you may receive all the benefits of the retention enema.

The Lemon Cleansing Enema:

Add the juice of three lemons to 2 quarts lukewarm water.

Using the same procedure as outlined above, that is, tip lubrication and position, deliver the liquid while massaging your abdomen.

After all the liquid has been delivered, roll on to your back, then onto your left side, all the while massaging your intestines.

Roll onto your right side, again while massaging up and down your abdomen.

Try to retain the solution for about 3 - 4 minutes.

The massaging helps to loosen hardened fecal matter from the bowel.

If you experience discomfort as the liquid is being delivered, stop the flow for a few moments, until the spasm subsides, then resume.

You may not be able to accept and hold the entire 2 quarts the first time you receive a cleansing enema; however after 2 or 3 times, you will be able to accept the full 2 quarts. Just go slowly. If you feel any discomfort, stop, breathe, relax, and resume.

There are different herbs and additives that can be used in the enema liquid - all of which have different purposes. Catnip Tea is good to reduce fevers. Acidophilus helps relieve gas and helps the body fight yeast infection. Apple Cider Vinegar is an astringent and marvelous cleanser. Honey is soothing to sore tissues. Chamomile is soothing and helps relieve gas. Hydrated bentonite absorbs toxins; Pau D'Arco tea helps to ease candida; Garlic is a natural antibiotic; Tea Tree Oil is also a natural antibiotic and soothes candida.

Enemas are very good for your health, but should not be used more than directed for the purpose required or effect desired.

Another method of maintaining colon health is Colonic Hydrotherapy, which is performed by a skilled and certified Colon Therapist.

Our bodies have a way of telling us when things are not quite right. If you suffer from any of these symptoms, perhaps you might consider colon hydrotherapy as a way to cleanse your body's elimination system and set your system back on track::
