Eclipse - February 2008

eclipse beginning eclipse eclipse red moon red moon red moon full

The full moon went into total eclipse on the night of February 20, 2008. The photographs above show the eclipse in its different phases, visible from Wewahitchka, Florida.

The Sun, Earth and Moon were in straight alignment, which causes the Earth to come between the Sun and the Moon. What you are seeing above is the Sun's reflection off the Earth shining on the Moon giving it this eery glow which turns slowly to a red glow until full eclipse (the last photo) at which time the Moon appears to turn totally red.

Pictures were taken with an Olympus SP510 on a tripod for stability.

Why does the Moon appear to turn red during the Lunar Eclipse?

The atmosphere of the Earth—the stratosphere—redirects (refracts) the light coming from the Sun (scatters it) so that it becomes reddish-orange in color, which is why we often see a reddish sunset at dusk. The amount of scattered light depends on the amount of dust in the atmosphere. The more dust, the more scattering of light, and the deeper coppery-red color seen on the Moon. In the case of a lunar eclipse, some of the scattered sunlight in the upper stratosphere comes into contact with the ozone layer. This scattered light becomes a turquoise color when it touches the ozone layer. (excerpt from ITwire.com )

What is the spiritual effect of a total lunar eclipse?

February 2008's lunar eclipse occurs during the zodiac sign of Pisces under the aspects of Virgo, bringing forth an enormous amount of psychic energy . Using this energy flow will give you an opportunity to re-create yourself or some aspect of your life -- a 'newness' to your personal power, should you choose to embrace it.

Virgo embodies perfection and purity as a healing energy that permeates the physical self as well as spiritual self. We may feel the effects of this forward movement to make changes for the good of the whole and come out better than we were before. We have the spiritual opportunity to clear out negativity and regain lost balance in our romantic lives, our ability to persevere and to apply diligence in a new refreshment of endeavors.

One of the many areas affected in our lives with this Virgo energy is our draw to heal ourselves, utilizing self-love with the same charity and grace that we offer to others on a continual basis; we know have the wherewithall to turn this energy inward toward ourselves.

Generally, Lunar Eclipses signal the retreat of the old and the expression of new identities and this is indeed the case in the February 20, 2008 Lunar Eclipse. Those of us who feel negatively impacted by the full moon will find their energies increased ten-fold by the eclipse on a full moon; however, you can utilize this energy for the good by taking a deep breath and relaxing into the energies around you. One way will be to focus on the beauty of the event and the knowledge that it will not occur again until December 2010!
