Lunar / Sun Day Sermon

Working Your Passion
Sunday, June 17, 2007

Greetings One and All ....

Do you love what you do? Does the thought of another day at work make you jump up out of the bed with a smile to greet the day, or ... do you bury your head under the covers for another 9 minute snooze?

Uh huh .. thought so !   Been there, done that myself.  But for the most part,  I’ve been fortunate enough to recognize that I have had a number of opportunities to work my passion, do something that I absolutely loved, so much so, that I never realized the hour, often worked long past the norm.   What drives us to work ridiculous hours? Passion. Plain and simple.

“I never did a day's work in my life. It was all fun.” Thomas Edison

Many time, people stay in jobs that they absolutely hate – and for many apparently viable reasons (read that: excuses) – Often times its the benefits, insurance, and of course, “Golden Handcuffs” being top of the list which may equate to high pay for low esteem.

“When work is a pleasure, life is a joy; when work is duty, life is slavery.” Maxim Gorky

My own burning interest in alternative ways to better health coupled with a desire to earn a living resulted in the creation of an online health food shop which grew into Nature’s Perfect Food, a small organic grocery and café.  I so loved this business and worked very hard at it, oftentimes till late at night.  I learned the true meaning of the saying … “time flies when you are having fun.”    And, it does!  When you love what you do, you joyfully lose track of time.

“Choose the job that you love and you will never have to work for a day in your life.” Author Unknown

To work your passion, it is important to be true to yourself. Don't be afraid of what you like. If you like it, then ... chances are there are others who share your passion. Network with them !

“Nobody is to be pitied as much as the person
who gets nothing out of his job but his pay.”
Dale Carnegie

Got a hobby? Got a job!   Looking in the newspaper one day … many years ago, I saw an ad offering Twenty-five guppies and a 10-gallon tank set-up for $10.99.  This led me on an interesting journey that began in a department store in Harlem and ended with a successful and lucrative business.  A hobby was born within me that eventually lead to a successful small tropical fish business, which lead to a successful full-blown pet shop.  This is a classic case of working your passion. The love of the tropical fish-keeping hobby grew into a business based on one thing – deep love – ‘passion’.

“Follow your passion and success will follow you.” Arthur Buddhold

Inside of each of us is a desire to create.  We are born with it.  It is our ‘spirit’, the fire that drives us.    Passion is a burning desire and working your passion means that you will perform your job duties to the best of your ability.  If you look at your job as .. ‘just a job’ .. you are simply wasting your time, spinning your wheels and not moving forward.  However, on the other hand, when you ignite the fuel of passion and process love into your ability to earn a living, the whole scenario changes.

Lawler Kang emphasizes the “Five P’s” to success as such:  Passion, Proficiencies, Priorities, Plan and Prove.   I find it interesting that his first choice is … Passion.

Kang explains that passion is our mission in life, that which takes us on a journey of a lifetime.  I must agree!  Working with passion causes us to find our own niche, our place in this huge world.  From here we can then move forward to put our passion to good use.

Proficiencies, according to Kang, are our talents and gifts.  He suggests that we prioritize our talents in order of their importance and work them into our game plan, then  …. Prove it to ourselves by pitching it and gaining support of others.  I can tell you that this method really works, as I have used it unconsciously myself.

It is paramount to examine your values closely.  Think about what is really important to you and consider ways to incorporate these values into your work style.

 “Live with passion.” Anthony Robbins

Working our passion does more for us than we can see in the concrete -- it opens us up to the blessings of the Universe where we are able to receive a validating shower of abundance and prosperity.

How does one go discover their passion?  Here are some tips:

·        Think about what it is that you really love to do.  Sewing, writing, cooking, surfing .. .. .. and research the possibilities.

·        Look at what you spend hours reading about or researching.  Is there a certain magazine that you subscribe to regularly, or a book style that you fancy?

·        Use free word association.  Take a sheet of paper and write down one word of something that you like and expand on it with whatever comes to mind.  Within a few minutes you may have a list of possibilities.

·        Network.  Look for mail groups online to meet others who share your interests and learn their views and experiences.

·        Meditate on your ideas and imagine yourself in different scenarios involving your interests .. consider which one feels good.

“Do you work to live … or like me, live to work?”  Bob Bly

Don’t be afraid to try new things and explore the options available to you.  You might be very surprised to find that your ‘hobby’ will grow to become a creative way for  you to sustain yourself and share your gifts and talents with a waiting audience.

You have my warmest wishes for success in all that you do !  Just “Do It.”

Be blessed ...
