Lunar / Sun Day Sermon

Undo ... Delete !!
Sunday, May 27, 2007

Greetings One and All ....

Computers ... we all have them, and sometimes, we all hate them. They get sick, catch 'viruses', they freeze up, they sometimes squall and give us the 'dreaded blue screen' .. but two little things that computers taught us to use without impunity are ..”Delete” and “Undo” !

Ahhhh yes ! The wonderful “delete” key! Press it once and you can erase a word, a paragraph, a page or an entire document! Wow .. what power ! And, then, there's the “undo” command, just in case you delete something that you really wanted .. you can simply select .. 'undo' and ... voila ! The miraculous return of that which you thought you didn't need but discovered you really needed anyway.

Imagine for a moment that we had a delete key and undo command in our lives! For instance, in a fit of frustration, we barrel into a parking spot at the local Walmart which our over-sized SUV can barely fit into and ... ooopsie! There goes a lovely scratch down the side of the quarter panel as we eeek past the buggy stand. No problem ... DELETE !

Or, we said some mean words to our son this morning as he was poking along ever so slowly to get dressed for school. The bus will be here in 15 minutes and he's still moping around looking for his 'favorite' tee shirt. Those sharp words came out of our mouths aimed directly at his heart and .. really hurt. The result? We lowered his self-esteem another notch and made him go all the more slowly, causing more frustration to both of you. UNDO !!

Just imagine the brevity of a delete key and undo command in our lives .... Gas prices going up? Salary too low? Boyfriend left you for your best friend? Husband or wife have taken on a lover? Business competition too stiff? UNDO !! and DELETE!!

Or, your father suffered from congestive heart failure for years ... UNDO his pain and suffering. Your best friend died of inflammatory breast cancer, DELETE the cancer !!

Don't like the present government? DELETE !

Aren't pleased with our present immigration situation? UNDO !

I'm sure you get the gist of where this is all going .. if our lives were as easy as operating a computer, just think how easy it would be to change things! But .. in essence, would it really?

Think of it this way ... if life had an Undo command, we'd never have to worry about making a decision again. Nothing would matter. We would, in effect, be breeding weakness into our society, where individuals would be unable to decide what they want, when they want it, how they want and where they want it. Why bother making a decision if all you need to do is select “Undo.” The act of decision making would become obsolete. The entire protocol would evaporate and decision-makers would go the way of the dinosaur.

When things don't go our way, we have to struggle to find a way around or over an obstacle. Struggling is hard, but without it ... what would we become? “Fuggedabowdit ... Delete!”

In a world where only the strong survive, with one stroke .. we could change it all. Poof! Undo and the world would seem right again. But that isn't necessarily so. Each experience rounds us out, forms our character and makes us who we truly are in the grand scheme of things. Experience is the greatest teacher of all times.

I love my “delete” key and use my 'undo' command often on my computer; they have salvaged many an 'ooopsie'. However, in retrospect, when applied to my life .. I think I'll opt for the ability to live with my decisions, right or wrong. They are my choices, I've made them and I'll learn something in the interim. Standing by one's convictions is perhaps a lot more difficult than simply hitting “delete” .. but, the benefits last far into the future and beyond.

I say, let's leave the “Undo” command and the “Delete” key right where they are .. in our computer programs and on our keyboards. Let's take life by the reigns and drive it for all its worth! Yee haa ! What a ride!

Be blessed!
